What You Will Need
- Your new smart lock (and its included hardware)
- A Phillips-head screwdriver
- AA batteries (usually included)
- Your smartphone with the lock app installed
Step 1: Remove Your Old Lock
Unscrew the interior thumb-turn assembly and the exterior cylinder. Keep the strike plate — you will likely reuse it. Take note of your backset measurement (the distance from the door edge to the centre of the hole) — standard UK doors are 44mm or 57mm.
Step 2: Fit the New Lock
Thread the cable through the door hole, attach the exterior keypad or cylinder first, then mount the interior assembly. Most smart locks use a standard ANSI/backset that fits existing holes — no drilling required on most UK doors.
Step 3: Install Batteries
Insert the AA batteries before completing the final screw tightening — you want the lock powered during alignment testing. The lock should beep or light up on first power.
Step 4: Align and Test the Latch
This is the most important step. Close the door and test the deadbolt throw manually — it should slide smoothly into the strike plate with zero resistance. Any friction here means the lock will jam or drain batteries prematurely. Adjust the strike plate if needed.
Step 5: Connect to the App
Download the manufacturer app and follow the pairing instructions. Most use Bluetooth for initial setup, then connect to your home Wi-Fi. Set your PIN codes, configure auto-lock timing, and add any additional users.
Common Problems and Fixes
- Lock jams: Strike plate misaligned — loosen and reposition.
- App won’t connect: Make sure you are on 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, not 5GHz.
- Deadbolt stiff to turn: Door warped or hinges loose — fix the door before blaming the lock.
- Low battery warning immediately: Some brands ship with partially drained batteries — replace them.
